Edward Jenner is a physician who continues to be remembered across the world for his finding of a vaccine for the dreaded Small Pox epidemic. Jenner’s path-breaking discovery has helped in rescuing the lives of thousands of individuals. Although many other medical practitioners had inferred that people infected by Cowpox disease were immune to Small Pox, it was Jenner who proved it through his risky experiment. Jenner injected the pus of cow pox on a 12-year-old boy to observe if he would be immune to Small Pox, which resulted in a success. This led to the discovery of the vaccine which cured people of a dreaded disease. The physician has also penned his observations about new born Cuckoo birds, a feat which most medical practitioners failed to achieve. He stated that the depressions on the bodies of new born Cuckoo birds exist for just a few days and help them protect other eggs in the nest. This observation was equally well-lauded. His contribution towards the field of medicine has earned him the title of ‘The father of immunology’. Many science consortiums and societies have paid their tribute to Jenner’s achievements.
