Transition elements are those which has a partially filled d sub-shell, or which can give rise to cations with an incomplete d sub-shell. So transition elements are elements where filling of d orbitals takes place. And d subshell can accomodate only 10 electrons. So any transition series contains only ten elements.

The transition elements are also known as the d-block elements, because while the outermost level contains at most two electrons, their next to outermost main levels have incompletely filled d sub-orbitals, which are filled-up progressively on going across the periodic table from 8to 18 electrons.
