Question :-

A certain amount is equally distributed among certain number of students. Each would get Rs.2 less if 10 students were more and each would get Rs.6 more if 15 students were less. Find the number of students and the amount distributed.

Given :-

  • Each student would get 2 rupees less if 10 more students were more to the group.
  • Each student would get 6 rupees more if 15 students were less in the group.

To Find :-

  • Total number of students & the amount distributed among them.

Solution :-

Suppose the total number of students be x and the amount given to each each student be y.

Then, the total amount distributed would be: xy

A.T.Q,

⇒ (x + 10)(y - 2) = xy

⇒ xy - 2x + 10y - 20 = xy

⇒ -2x + 10y - 20 = 0

⇒ 2x - 10y = -20

⇒ x - 5y = -10............( 1 )

Also,

⇒ (x - 15)(y + 6) = xy

⇒ xy + 6x - 15y - 90 = xy

⇒ 6x - 15y = 90.........( 2 )

Multiplying ( 1 ) with 6 gives,

⇒ 6x - 30y = -60.......( 3 )

Subtracting ( 3 ) from ( 2 ), we get,

⇒ 15y = 150

⇒ y = 150/15

⇒ y = 10

Substituting value of y in ( 1 ), we get,

⇒ x -(5 × 10) = -10

⇒ x - 50 = -10

⇒ x = 50 - 10

x = 40

Hence,

  • Total number of students = 40
  • Total amount distributed among them = xy = 40 × 10 = Rs. 400
