A useful way of characterizing organic formulae is by their so-called degree of unsaturationdegree of unsaturation . Alkanes have the MAXIMUM number of C−HC−H bonds, and are said to be saturated. Alkane thus have general formula CnH2n+2CnH2n+2 . Each TWO HYDROGENS LESS than this formula corresponds to ONE degree of unsaturationONE degree of unsaturation .

And so we got ethane, C2H6C2H6 , i.e. SATURATED….

And we got ethylene, C2H4C2H4 , i.e. ONE DEGREE of unsaturation.

And we got acetylene, HC≡CHHC≡CH , i.e. TWO DEGREES of unsaturation.

Thank you
