Those reactions in which a compound splits up into two or more simpler substances are known as decomposition reactions.

Examples:-  When Calcium Carbonate is heated, it decomposes to give calcium oxide and carbon dioxide :-

  CaCO3 (s) -----Heat----> CaO (s) + CO2

Example:- When electric current is passed through molten aluminium oxide, it decomposes to give aluminium metal and oxygen gas:-

 2Al2O3 (l) ----Electricity----> 4Al (l) + 3O2 (g)

Example :- When silver chloride is exposed to light, it decomposes to form silver metal and chlorine gas:-

 2AgCl (s) ----Light----> 2Ag (s) + Cl2 (g)
