Nicola and Jacopo were dressed shabbily in worn- out, discarded clothes, much bigger than their own size. Their hair was dirty and tangled. They appeared to be from a poor background but the narrator met them on different occasions and each time he noticed them busy doing some or the other work. They were never idle and always showed willingness to work. However it was only towards the end that the narrator discovered that they were actually from a well-to- do and cultured family. Their mother was already dead, then their father also died in the war and their home was destroyed due to bombing.
Thus, in case of the two boys it proved that appearances can be deceptive as they were well behaved, courteous and full of self respect.
