According to Newton’s third law of motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

For example, if you place a book on a table, the book’s weight [weight is due to the gravitational force of attraction of the earth] is the action which pushes the table downwards. Also, the table exerts an equal and opposite reaction, which keeps the book in its place.

Another example is the motion of a rocket.

When the exhaust gas is forced out through the nozzle [backward], it is the action.

The reaction is the forward motion of the rocket.

When you jump….

Action: You push your feet down against the ground.
Reaction: The ground pushes back up against your feet.

There are much more applications for understanding Newton’s third law of motion.
