William Shakespeare was the most famous and often-quoted dramatists of the world. His works have influenced the later generations in several ways. In spite of being a 16th century dramatist, his works are appreciated even today by many readers around the world.

The Greek dramatic traditions that were followed during the pre-Shakespearean times, were challenged by Shakespeare. The following are some of the very important contribution on English Drama:

a) Shakespeare didn’t follow the three Unities ie Unity of Time, Unity of Place and Unity of Action, which were strongly followed by the Greek dramatists.

b) The Greek writers strictly adhered to the two water-tight types of drama - tragedies or comedies. Shakespeare invented new sub-genre like Tragi-comedies, Dark comedies, Romantic comedies, Historical plays, Romances etc. Ex: Tempest, As You Like It, Twelfth Night etc.

c) He experimented and created characters that reflected the popular culture and the age. Ex: Falstaff, King Lear, Macbeth etc

d) Though some of his plots were borrowed from other writers, he gave a unique twist and recreated them to suit his audience.

e) He used traditional dramatic techniques like soliloquy, chorus etc  convey the story to the audience of the age.
