Architecture of Chola Dynasty
Explanation:
- During the rule of Cholas, temple architecture in the south reached it's zenith.
- The Chola Kings were great temple builders.
- The Bridgeshwara temple, was built at Tanjore.
- It is dedicated to Shiva and was built by Rajaraja Chola in the eleventh century.
- It has the tallest shikhara amongst all temples of its time .
- The 90 tonne stone for the top of the Shikhara was too heavy to lift manually as there was no cranes in those days.
- Therefore architects built an inclined path of 4km to the top and rolled it all way to the top of the temple.
- Early Chola temples were simple structures.
- In the later period temples became bigger and grander .
- The gateway of the temple was called Gopuram.
- The main shrine was called Gargbhagira.
- The top of the main shrine had a tall structure called Shikhara .
- Another structure in front of the main shrine was called the mandapa.
