Viruses are considered different from other microorganisms because they can multiply only by entering the host organisms.

What are viruses?

  • Viruses are inert outside the living cells and hence, cannot replicate without the host organisms. Once they infect the living cell of an organism, they live there and multiply by using the machinery of the host organisms.
  • Viruses are known to infect several life forms such as bacteria, plants and animals. In animals, they cause various diseases such as common cold, dengue, mumps etc.

Note: Other microbes such as bacteria, fungi etc. do not require host organisms for their growth or multiplication. Whenever conditions are favourable, they multiply.
