Mitochondria

These are membrane bound organelles and their size range from 0.5 to 1.0 micrometre in diameter. Mitochondria are known as the power of the cell, this is because the energy required by various chemical activities needs for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate)molecules. ATP is known as the energy currency of the cell. The body loses energy stored in ATP for making new chemical compounds and for mechanical work. The mitochondria was first observed by kolliker in 1880 ."Mitochondria" name was given by benda in in 1897. The mitochondria are usually rod-shaped .The mitochondria are enclosed by double membrane envelope and two membrane of the envelope are

  • Outer membrane
  • inner membrane

The outer membrane restrict the organelle while the inner membrane is thrown in words into many fall like projections called cristae.

Hope it help you.
