A verbal scale is inserted the same way as a representative fraction – click on Insert on the top bar menu and select Scale Text (figure 2). All but the first options are verbal scales – choose the one that will make the most sense to your map readers. After you select one, you can change many of its properties.
Verbal scale expresses in words a relationship between a map distance and a ground distance. Usually it is along the lines of: One inch represents 16 miles. Here it is implied that the one-inch is on the map, and that one-inch represents 16 miles on the ground.
