no these points are different from each other

this is because in x-y co-ordinate system if there is a point (p,q) then p denotes it's distance from x axis and q denotes its distance from y axis

thus in the above case both the coordinates have different x and y coordinates

The position of both points (5,-8) and (-8,5) are different.

Given:

  • Two points (5,-8) and (-8,5).

To find:

  • Are the positions of (5,-8) and (-8,5) is same? Justify your answer?
  • State the reason.

Solution:

Concept to be used:

  • In Cartesian coordinates the sequence of numbers is fixed.
  • A(x,y); the number at first place is x coordinate and the number at second place is y coordinate.

Step 1:

Locate the points on graph.

To understand the position of points, locate the points on graph.

*Graph is attached.

Point (5,-8) is in IV quadrant while point (-8,5) is in II quadrant.

Thus,

It is clear that the position of both points (5,-8) and (-8,5) are not same.

Step 2:

Justification and reason.

In point (5,-8),

\bf x = 5 \: and \: y = - 8 \\

and in point (-8,5),

\bf x = - 8 \: and \: y = 5 \\

So, according to the values of x and y ,we can say the both points are different.

While writing the Cartesian coordinates, we must remember that these are ordered pairs, that is we can not change the order of numbers. If we do so,the position of points will change.

Thus,

The position of both points (5,-8) and (-8,5) are not same.
