let width is x

side of inside square is 40

side of outside square is 40+x

area of bigger square - area of smaller square= 425

(40+×)^2 - 40^2 = 425

x^2 + 80x -425=0

Let the width of the path be "x" m.

Now, according to the question

(40 + 2x)^2 - 40^2 = 425

40^2 + 160x + 4x^2 - 40^2 = 425

4x^2 + 160x - 425 = 0

(2x)^2 + 2(2x)(40) +1600 - 2025 = 0

(2x + 40)^2 = 2025

2x + 40 = +- 45

x = 5/2, -85/2

Since it can't be negative

So, the required width of the path is 5/2 m or 2.5 m
