Answer:

Area of bigger square = side×side

= 12×12

= 144 Sq. cm

Area of smaller square = side×side

= 3×3

= 9 Sq. cm

Area of 4 smaller square = 4(9)

= 36 Sq. cm

Therefore,

Area of unshaded region = (Area of bigger square) - (Area of 4 smaller square)

= 144 - 36

= 107 Sq. cm
