four students each, in such a way that there is equal distance between
adjacent persons. In row 1 - Anil, Balu, Charan, David is seated and all
of them are facing south. In row 2 - Pavitra, Qunie, Reshma, Shivani are
seated and all of them are facing north. Therefore each member
seated in a row faces another member of the other row. (All the
information given above does not necessarily represent the order of
seating in the final arrangement)

Given :  Eight students from different Departments viz. ECE, CSE, EEE, IT, EIE, MECH, CIVIL and CHEMICAL are sitting in two parallel rows containing, four students each, in such a way that there is equal distance between adjacent persons. In row 1 - Anil, Balu, Charan, David is seated and all of them are facing south. In row 2 - Pavitra, Qunie, Reshma, Shivani are seated and all of them are facing north.

To Find :  Seating arrangement

Solution:

Not in order :

ABCD

PQRS

Charan sits second to the right of the student from CHEMICAL.

x      C    x      Chem   or    C  x  Chem x

Reshma is an immediate neighbour  of the student who faces the student from CHEMICAL.

x   C  x  Chem    or    C  x  Chem x

        R                             R             R

Only one student sits between Reshma and the students from IT. Immediate neighbour of the student  from IT faces the student from EEE.

 x   C/EEE  x  Chem    or    C/EEE  x  Chem x

IT                R                                   IT             R

Pavitra is not from  IT. Pavitra does not face the student from CHEMICAL.

 x   C/EEE  x  Chem    or     C/EEE   x   Chem  x

IT        P      R                          P         IT             R

The one who faces Shivani sits immediately to the left of Anil.

 x   C/EEE  A  Chem    or     C/EEE   A   Chem  x

IT        P      R      S                   P         IT      S       R

Balu does not sit on any of the extreme ends of the line

 x   C/EEE  A  Chem

IT        P      R      S

Above option no more valid.

C/EEE   A   B/Chem  x

 P         IT      S        R

Hence

C/EEE   A       B/Chem  D

 P         Q/IT      S          R

Qunie faces the student from EIE.

C/EEE   A/EIE       B/Chem  D

 P          Q/IT         S             R

The student from ECE faces the student from MECH.

C/EEE   A/EIE       B/Chem  D/ECE/MECH

 P          Q/IT         S             R/MECH/ECE

The student from CHEMICAL does not face  the student from CSE.

C/EEE     A/EIE       B/Chem  D/ECE/MECH

 P/CSE    Q/IT         S             R/MECH/ECE

Reshma is not from MECH.

C/EEE     A/EIE       B/Chem  D/MECH

 P/CSE    Q/IT         S             R/ECE

C/EEE     A/EIE       B/Chem  D/MECH

 P/CSE    Q/IT         S/Civil     R/ECE

Pavitra is related to EIE in the same way as Balu is related to IT

David is related to CIVIL

Final arrangement

Charan/EEE     Anil/EIE          Balu/Chem        David/MECH

 Pavitra/CSE    Qunie/IT         Shivanu/Civil     Reshma/ECE

David is related to CIVIL
