Simple.
Room is rectangle
Iength x breadth
540 x 480 cm (converted m to cms)

Carpet is centrally placed 40cm

So to get length and breadth of carpet reduce 80cm (both side 40cm each ).
Area of Carpet 460cmx 400cm
Convert to Meters. So 4.6m x 4 m
18.4 sq mtrs

According to your question it left 40cm from every corner around the room.That means the length and breadth of the is deducted by 40 × 2 = 80 cm
Length = 5.4m = 540 cm which is deduced by 80 cm =>540 - 80 = 460 cm.
Breadth = 4.8m = 480 cm which is deduced by 80 cm =>480-80=400 cm
the the length and breadth of the carpet is 460cm and 400 cm respectively.Now convert them into meters =>4.0 m and 4.6 m
Area = 4.0 × 4.6 = 18.4 m^2
