Concept

In fractions, the equal components of a whole or group of things are represented. Therefore, if we divide a group of objects into parts, each component represents a portion of the whole. Fractions having the same denominator are said to be like fractions. To organize the fractions in order, we shall change them to like fractions.

Given

4/6 , 3/8 , 6/12 , 5/16

Find

the ascending order of the above mentioned fractions.

Solution

Fractions should be written with a common denominator so that they can be arranged in ascending order. Compare the numerators to get the smallest fraction, then arrange the fractions. Rewrite the numbers in the question in the order of size.

L.C.M of the denominators is = 2×2×2×2×3 = 48

To convert the fraction to similar fractions, divide the LCM by the denominator, and then multiply the result by the numerator and denominator of the fraction.

as in fraction 4/6 denominator is 6.

Divide 48÷6 = 8

now multiply the number 8 to both numerator and denominator.

4×8/6×8 = 32/48

now , fraction 3/8

divide 48÷8 = 6

3×6/8×6 = 24/48

similarly, 6/12

Divide 48÷12 = 4

6×4/12×4 = 24/48

and fraction 5/16

Divide 48÷16 = 3

5×3/16×3 = 15/48

hence we get the ascending order of the fractions as

15/48< 18/48 < 24/48 < 32/48 which means 5/16<3/8<6/12<4/6

therefore the ascending order is 5/16<3/8<6/12<4/6
