Speech on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for Children
Welcome everyone and greetings for a good day ahead. Today I am going to bother you a little bit by speaking on the topic ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’. And I expect patience and co-operation from your end.
Every day we do things which generate waste. Be it drinking a bottle of water or eating a banana….waste is generated. From simple to simple forms of work. Even the electricity that we are using every day is generating tons and tons of waste products.
Even the moment that I am talking in microphone right now, even this act amount to a lot of waste. Hence this huge amount of waste needs disposal otherwise it will collect in tremendous amounts and create problems like- diseases, unhygienic and low aesthetic values. Hence waste build up should be avoided.
But with such high rate waste production, it is getting increasingly difficult to dispose off. Waste is getting collected in the dumping yards where it should be disposed off.
The rate of waste production is higher than the disposal rate. Hence an immediate effort to utilize the waste products is what is needed.
This is where the terms ‘reduce’, ‘reuse’, ‘recycle’ kicks in. These are common terms to be heard in modern industry today. They form a part of sustainable architecture.
‘Reduce’ means to lessen in quantity the amount of waste generated. ‘Reuse’ means to use an already used product which is in suitably good condition.
‘Recycle’ means to make new items out of the old items and put them to good use all over again. That is using the waste products only to make new items out of it. This has the following advantages-
The waste gets disposed off
New items are produced which can be used
No harmful side effects or wastes generated.
There is no build up of harmful waste
It is a constructive method
Hence there are so many advantages of recycling and using waste products.
Many people have, in the past, tried to develop this habit of recycling. Even now constant efforts are being made to keep building constructive items out of waste.
I will be listing a few examples of the items and efforts given at creating something out of waste, both inside India and outside India. To start with my list at the top comes-
Rock garden Chandigarh, India– rock garden was one of the earliest efforts at building something out of scrap or waste material. It is also known as Nek Chand’s rock garden after its founder Nek Chand, a government official who started the garden secretly in his spare time in 1957.
Today it spreads over an area of 40 acres (161874.25 m²). It is completely built of industrial and home waste and thrown-away items.
Plastic roads– recently efforts are being made to develop roads made of plastic materials. The man behind this thought is the ‘Plastic Man’ of India, Prof Rajagopalan Vasudevan, Professor of Chemistry at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai.
Tyres – Nowadays, with the advent of various technologies, vehicular tyres can be recycled and made into hot melt asphalt, primarily used for making crumb rubber modified asphalt pavement. Every year numerous tyres are disposed and are not put to any productive use.
Electronics – In todays, world, due to modernization and population growth, labour is cheap, and so is the manufactured goods, especially electronic items.
This, coupled with an overall increase in the purchasing power of the people has resulted in accumulation of huge quantities of electronic waste.
Today, if any appliance malfunctions, a person is more likely to throw it in the dump yard and replace it with a new one. This not only saves time but also saves the hassle of repairing.
However, this practice leads to a tremendously huge quantity of electronic waste each year which might have been prevented from forming in the first place.
However, now, in the wake of the idea of recycling, several companies salvage these old and malfunctioning electronic items and refurbish them and sell them back in the market at a reduced price with a warranty.
This aims at reducing the tones of electronic waste that is generated each year.
To conclude, I would say that the world that we live in today is our home; It is our mother. To keep it healthy and safe, we would go to any extent, then why not go to such extents to save our own planet?
Ask yourselves if you have ever thrown a plastic packet on road; ask yourselves if you have ever spit outside; ask yourselves if you have ever dumped garbage improperly.
If the answer to all these questions is ‘yes’, then it is cent percent sure that you have taken this world for granted, and its high time that we start caring for it before it answers us back with an apocalypse.
