There is no doubt that you can learn things online with the help of internet or sometimes at home by yourself with books . After that , with any certification you can get job or  decent employment .But according to me if you want to get in in-depth knowledge of any thing then you should have a guru or teacher around you . Who can tell you what's right & what's wrong . He can clear your doubts & endless questions . With whom you can do research & development  for betterment of society & new innovation for nation. I think effective learning is not possible without a teacher that's why it is mandatory at higher education to get a guide or counselor for Ph. D.
