Faith plays an important part in our everyday lives and in our interactions with people. It is impossible to live without faith.We need to have faith in our family members, the doctor we go to, our colleagues, employees, as well as in a higher Power. But what is faith? Is it blind belief? Or does faith need to be based on reason and understanding?

Blind faith is belief in a thing or person without any reasoning or basis.Unquestioned allegiance can be dangerous. Faith, on the other hand, is based on logic and rational thinking. You can approach a doctor just because your neighbour says he is good.Or you may accept the neighbour’s recommendation but do a background check before going to him. Having decided to entrust your health to him you do not question his bona fides at every step. However, you question him if you do not understand or agree with him.
Your adherence to the treatment regimen depends on the extent to which you are convinced that he is right.Thereafter you follow your conviction.You cannot follow someone else’s advice blindly, however right he may be. It is the same with a lawyer, chartered accountant or spiritual master. In all these cases, you are approaching a person who has knowledge while you are in ignorance. This puts you at a disadvantage straightaway. It is impossible for you to know what he knows. So you need to have faith.But not blind faith.Your approach must be in an environment of trust and confidence,the belief that here is a person who has the knowledge I need and who can help me. However, at every juncture, you must have the freedom to question, enquire and get answers to your queries. Only then will you be convinced and follow his guidance.
There may be some things that you do not understand. Set them aside for a later date and deal only with what you can comprehend and put into action. If you do not have basic faith in the person’s competence and are constantly wondering if he will take you for a ride, there will be no meaningful relationship. However, if you do not use your own intellect and you follow a person unquestioningly, it will be detrimental for you even if he is right and well-meaning. And if he has ulterior motives, the result can be disastrous for you. With reference to a spiritual master, the role of faith is even more important.There is no way of verifying the existence of God or even the efficacy of the path recommended.
