Digital India is a campaign launched by the Government of India in order to ensure the Government's services are made available to citizens electronically by improved online infrastructure and by increasing Internet connectivity or by making the country digitally empowered in the field of technology.[1][2] The initiative includes plans to connect rural areas with high-speed internet networks. Digital India consists of three core components: the development of secure and stable digital infrastructure, delivering government services digitally, and universal digital literacy.

Launched on 1 July 2015 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is both enabler and beneficiary of other key Government of India schemes, such as BharatNet, Make in India, Startup India and Standup India, industrial corridors, Bharatmala, Sagarmala

 

History

Digital India was launched by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 1 July 2015 with an objective of connecting rural areas with high-speed Internet networks and improving digital literacy.[5][6][7] The vision of Digital India programme is inclusive growth in areas of electronic services, products, manufacturing and job opportunities. It is centred on three key areas – digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen, governance and services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizens.[8]

Digital India initiative

The Government of India's entity Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) which executes the BharatNet project is the custodian of Digital India (DI) project.[9][10]

Implementation

New digital services

Some of the facilities which will be provided through this initiative are Bharat net, digital locker, e-education, e-health, e-sign, e-shopping and national scholarship portal. As part of Digital India, Indian Government planned to launch Botnet cleaning centers.[11]

National e-Governance Plan aimed at bringing all the front-end government services online.

MyGov.in is a platform to share inputs and ideas on matters of policy and governance.[12] It is a platform for citizen engagement in governance, through a "Discuss", "Do" and "Disseminate" approach.[7]

UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is a Government of India all-in-one single unified secure multi-channel multi-platform multi-lingual multi-service freeware mobile app for accessing over 1,200 central and state government services in multiple Indian languages over Android, iOS, Windows and USSD (feature phone) devices, including services such as AADHAAR, DigiLocker, Bharat Bill Payment System, PAN, EPFO services, PMKVY services, AICTE, CBSE, tax and fee or utilities bills payments, education, job search, tax, business, health, agriculture, travel, Indian railway tickets bookings, birth certificates, e-District, e-Panchayat, police clearance, passport, other utility services from private companies and much more.[13]

eSign framework allows citizens to digitally sign a document online using Aadhaar authentication.[7]

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Mobile app is being used by people and Government organisations for achieving the goals of Swachh Bharat Mission.[7]

eHospital application provides important services such as online registration, payment of fees and appointment, online diagnostic reports, enquiring availability of blood online, etc.

Digital attendance: attendance.gov.in was launched by PM Narendra Modi on 1 July 2015[5] to keep a record of the attendance of government employees on a real-time basis.[14] This initiative started with implementation of a common Biometric Attendance System (BAS) in the central government offices located in Delhi.[15]

Back-end digitisation

Black money eradication: The 2016 Union budget of India announced 11 technology initiatives including the use of data analytics to nab tax evaders, creating a substantial opportunity for IT companies to build out the systems that will be required.[16] Digital Literacy mission will cover six crore rural households.[16] It is planned to connect 550 farmer markets in the country through the use of technology.[17]

Facilities to digitally empower citizens

Digital Locker facility will help citizens to digitally store their important documents like PAN card, passport, mark sheets and degree certificates. Digital Locker will provide secure access to Government-issued documents. It uses authenticity services provided by Aadhaar. It is aimed at eliminating the use of physical documents and enables the sharing of verified electronic documents across government agencies. Three key stakeholders of DigiLocker are Citizen, Issuer and requester.[7][18][19]

BPO and job growth: The government is planning to create 28,000 seats of BPOs in various states and set up at least one Common Service Centre in each of the gram panchayats in the state.[20]

                      Digital India

To make India more digital and more technological, government of India launched the "Digital India Campaign". The main motive of this campaign is to provide and ensure the high speed internet and electronically things to every citizen of India. This campaign was launched in the year 2015 by Prime minister of India Narenda Modi at Delhi.

The main aim of this digital India campaign is to provide high speed internet to every citizen of India, Improving online infrastructure, to provide a digital ID to every citizen, providing the availability of integrated services and departments to every citizen. To make India more digitized, government of India have created free Wi-Fi zones at public places like Metro, Railways and Airports.

Government of India ensure to have all transactions and payments online and digitized by the year 2023. Government has launched the digital locker to provide a connection between government and common people. Through this, People can send and receive e-documents, e-tendering's and many more other digital activities.

Digital India is a new motive of Indian government to make India digitized and powerful knowledge economy country. Today, there are various Villages which still don't have availability of internet, Government motives to provide high speed internet to all of these citizens. Recently, in 2019, Government also launched the new program in digital India called as "National Broadband" which is the project of 7 Billion INR. This project Aims to provide high speed internet to every village and town. Digital India program is to be coordinated by DEITY.

Digital India is today one of the most successful campaign started by Indian Government. As this world is becoming digital and electronically day by day, Government of India is trying to make India more technological and more digital. The Internet service providers of India like Jio, Airtel, idea, vodafone, BSNL was communicated by government to low down the prices of their internet plans. Jio successfully done it's work. And, in 2016, the internet users in India was increased by 5 Million, 10 Million in 2017, 15 Million and 23 Million in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

As the number of smartphone and internet users in India are increasing day by day, then it is a clear sign that, The project "Digital India'' is a successful campaign by Indian government.

The three main visions of Digital India Campaign are:

i) Digital infrastructure

ii) On-demand operations and services

iii) Digital empowerment of citizens.

i) Digital infrastructure:

Providing high speed internet, Major use to online services to every citizen, creating a digital ID of every person, Mobile phone and banking making online and digitally.

ii) On demand operations and services

If common people will request government for any particular service which is not available in our country, but provided in other countries, then government will do on demand services. Citizens should be able to use all cloud apps and services for online data storage.

iii) Digital empowerment of citizens

This includes universal digital literacy, universal digital resources, services in Indian languages.

Indian Talent (IT) + Information Technology (IT) = India of tomorrow (IT).
