noise pollution
Problem:
-bird populations decline near roads
-traffic noise is a major contributor to the effects of roads on populations of animals
-bird populations in cities are lowers than those in more rural areas
-noise pollution disturbs migratory patterns

Causes:
-Some scientists suggest that the combination of chemical pollution, visual disturbances, and noise pollution lead to the decrease in bird populations near roads, not just noise pollution on it's own.
Solution
-wildlife managers are using the information from this experiment to improve their selection and management of bird habitats
-a major solution to this problem is to not build roads through the middle of forests where there is an abundance of wildlife
-To disprove this theory, researchers conducted an experiment in which they created a phantom road in Idaho and put speakers in the trees that played road noises.
-They also had control sites where no road noises were played
-At the non-conrol site, roadway sounds were played at intervals for four days on and four days off during migratory period
-A daily bird survey was collected in both cites; there was a 1/4 delcine in bird population at the non-control sites and no change at the control sites
