Answer:

                        Garbage Disposal

The problem of garbage disposal in developing and underdeveloped countries is quite challenging. Jacques Yves Cousteau, the famous French conservationist and environmentalist once said: “Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.” The menaces of unplanned and haphazard urbanization and industrialization have taken an irreparable toll on our environment. The unmanageable proliferation of human population leads to colossal creation of garbage. What aggravates the situation is lack of garbage management infrastructure and garbage treatment plants especially in the developing countries.

The problem of garbage management is very grim in India. It is estimated that 62 million tonnes of garbage is generated everyday by the 377 million people living in urban India, now the world’s third-largest garbage generator. As stated earlier, the issue is quite worrisome because there is no proper garbage management system in any of the cities. Even in the capital of India, Delhi, as one enters from Karnal, a huge mountain of burned garbage greets the eyes of the visitors. The stink and squalor are an apt prelude to the state of affair throughout the country.

In some of the very big cities heap of garbage remain piled up for days together waiting to be disposed, not to mention the absence of any advanced garbage treatment plants. Similarly most of the effluents from industries and sewage from city’s drainage systems are dumped into pure water bodies. As a consequence the environment has degraded a lot. There is an increase of many contagious diseases and infections.

The need of the hour is the Government must revise its garbage management policy and implement proper garbage management regulations throughout the country. Proper garbage and sewage treatment plants should be installed in each and every city. Toxic emissions of industries must be strictly regularized.  Installation of toxic smoke and effluents treatment plants must be mandatory at every industrial unit.

It is not the luxury we are talking about. Garbage management is the need of the hour. Any further delay in managing the garbage scientifically would mean further damage to our environment and health complications to the people of our country. The Government and the people must associate the garbage management drive to the already ongoing Swach Bharat Abhiyan. The people must also contribute towards garbage management. They must help the government system process and dispose the garbage properly.

With the collective will and participation of the people, this problem of garbage management is quite manageable. Each one of us must manage garbage at our own individual level.
