Several areas remain inundated as rescue teams including the Army, Navy, NDRF, SDRF work on war scale to provide relief and rescue people hit by the deluge. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced Rs 10,000 immediate assistance to flood-affected families.

Those who have lost their homes and land would be given Rs 10 lakh, while those whose houses had been destroyed or damaged would get Rs 4 lakh, CM Vijayan told reporters after a Cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, the weather department has issued red alert in districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode, and Orange alert has been issued in districts of Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod for Wednesday.

Wayanad, Kozhikode, Idukki and Malappuram were some of the worst-hit districts.

In last few days Malappuram district has seen a series of landslips due to heavy rains at Kavalappara and Kottakunnu resulting in the death of 24 people.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who represents Wayanad in Lok Sabha, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking help for the people of the flood-hit region. Rahul, who was on a two-day visit of Wayanad, also visited some of the relief camps set up for the affected people.

Meanwhile, UN General Assembly President Maria Fernanda Espinosa has expressed solidarity with India over floods wreaking havoc in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
