Eminent the 2001 Raman Magsaysay award for community leadership, Rajendra Singh has said that if the Ganga isnt saved then India wont be saved either. And nothing is more true than his contention. RECENT FLOOD in north Bihar is the result of a series of blunders which have been committed by the citizens of Bihar and Nepal. If we say that this cascade is only the result of malfunction of administration, incompetence of engineers and wrong acts and deeds of political leaders of Bihar, then it will be a big mistake.

Lack of consciousness among people of India regarding significance of river is nowadays a universal phenomenon. No one cares about the health of a river and due to this; situation is becoming from bad to worse.
Siltation from nearby embankments, pollution of water and defective construction of dams are curtailing the life of rivers. Right now, rivers have forgotten its ways. Its current is also not normal. In some places, rivers have turned out to be ponds. Its natural developments have been stymied by us in every nook and corner of our country.
Presently, every river is in danger whether it is Ganga or Yamuna. These rivers are just about to die very soon. Confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, which is only on the paper.
Due to gross interference by human beings in natural flow of river, inundation, famines, low water level, water borne diseases, deaths of aquatic life are confronting us on regular basis.
Though, all rivers are important for us, yet Ganga is most respected and important river of India. In other words, we can say that it is the life line of India. In present circumstances, without its existence, we cannot envisage India’s existence.
At this critical hour, when the country’s most revered river is crying out for help. We should come up for the help of Ganga. Rajendra Singh, who is also known as water man has extended his association with Ganga Sewa Abhiyan (GSA) to take up the cause of Ganga. Singh, who helped resurrect five dead rivers in the desert kingdom of Rajasthan, wants to see Ganga as the national river of the country.
We need the collective efforts of the society to help save the rivers. In this connection, we will have to pay more attention towards Ganga, because it is most beneficial river of country too. Besides, emotions of all people are deeply attached with this river.
Interestingly, an event like Kumbh has been grossly misunderstood over the years, and it now contributes more to polluting the rivers than its original aim of saving the river. We cannot expect the Ganga to purify us if we pollute it.
However, at least we can hope to achieve all objectives concerning rivers in a peaceful and non violent way. Basically, ignorance has led to the pollution of the Ganga and other rivers. Our countrymen need to raise awareness about these problems. In that case only, we shall be able to reinvigorate the endangered rivers.
