The need to conserve soil and create awareness among the people on soil erosion was stressed during the National Environmental Awareness Campaign 2014-2015, held here recently.
Organised by the Village Reconstruction Development Project (VRDP), speakers A. Venkatesh, Professor, Department of Geology, Periyar University, C.P. Venu of Social Action Movement, and A. Renganathan, Director of VRDP, said that the period of rainfall in recent years could not be predicted as done earlier. Due to urbanisation, water bodies were encroached upon and in the absence of water storage mechanism, soil gets affected. “More than 110 countries will turn deserts in the coming years and 60 per cent of the people from Sahara will migrate to North Africa and Europe in 2020’, they added.
Speakers said that the Ministry of Environment and Forest of the Government of India creates awareness on environment among the public through campaigns and this year the focus was on prevention of desertification, soil erosion and drought. They said that mining activity leads to soil erosion and asked people to come forward to conserve soil.
