The Himalayas are under threat from tourism and over-development of its surrounding areas. The large number or tourists who crowd the Himalayas every year during the tourist season bring pollution in the form of exhaled carbon dioxide as well as a huge quantity of litter to the region. The carbon dioxide hastens melting of ice and the litter harms the flora and fauna.
Development in and around the region aids tourism. But at the same time, it brings with it the dangers of industrial as well as vehicular pollutants. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide from vehicular and industrial exhausts are damaging the pristine Himalayan nature.
Unless urgent steps are taken to address these issues, sustaining the Himalayas will be a difficult or even impossible task.
