People of India from various regions are different
from one another in their living styles, culture, and facial features.
People of one region resemble one another, follow similar customs, and
speak the same language. People of eastern states are quite diverse
(different) from people of south of India or from Kashmir.
Yet all people live together in India being part of the federal structure. All people unite in parliament, ministries, committees, and administration and make decisions to affect the entire country. All people are treated equally. People of India follow many different religions and faiths. Hindus form the majority of Indians, but they respect other religions too.
There are many castes in each region. But people of different castes mix well with other castes and share the resources of the nation. Lifestyle of villagers is quite different from those of the urban citizens. People in hilly areas or forests have an altogether different life style. Indian government gives equal importance to all categories.
We stand as a country when ever an issue of national importance arises. All uphold the sovereignty and oneness of our country. Whenever an Indian goes out of the country, he/she always proud to be an Indian.
In India since our independence, there have been struggles in many regions for separation into states based on the regional factors. They are still going on in UP, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states. This struggles arises due to differences in the culture, caste, living style, and language differences in these regions. However, keeping in view the well being of those regions these regions have been combined with other regions for administration and development. Although there are differences, these people are joining hands with the others and living peacefully.
Kashmir is not like rest of India. Their culture, living style, resources and political situation is very different from the rest of India. Their close proximity with Pakistan and China makes it even more difficult to handle that region. So government of India has given a special status to Kashmir. They are part of the union of India. However, they are having a special status. After the recent floods rest of India has sympathised with Kashmir and has sent a lot of relief materials. That help shows the unity and pledge towards keeping the promise of unity.
Same way, we have all the states and regions responding to difficulties encountered by other regions. In India, many areas are more developed than some areas. There is no uniformity in the distribution of minerals, oil, industries, education, rivers and population among many regions. But India and its people have tried to share all the wealth from all states to the common good. Specific backward regions are identified for additional help.
There have been many clashes on basis of religion between Hindus and Muslims. Some clashes occurred also between Hindus and Sikhs during some years. But the wisdom of the people prevailed. People are better now to think of the country's progress as the first priority. People have realised unity is important.
When people go to other countries they highlight the pride of India rather than their own region's pride. We have a lot of differences among all the neighbouring states for sharing of waters from rivers, funds for development, new civil projects, sites for industries, railway lines and air ports allotment and development etc, However, we are all obeying the law and trying to mitigate the differences.
This is how Indians are living in diverse environment. The law of India has made possible and is holding the unity. The freedom fight for a long duration against the British has combined the various regions and the same spirit is holding strong still among all the regions.
This is the unity in diversity. The world appreciates India's peaceful and harmonic upholding of unity in diversity.
