India and Pakistan are perpetually in a state of war. One can choose friends, but this privilege is not available to neighbours, especially countries that share a common border.
The recalcitrance of Pakistan and its leaders' basic idea of being able to solve all its problems if India is annihilated is flawed beyond correction. The result of this is periodic border skirmishes and aiding terrorists to cause mayhem and destruction within India.
Today, both countries possess nuclear weapons. While India is a democracy and, therefore, has checks and balances in place, this is not so with Pakistan, where democracy is still in its stunted infancy. Pakistan's trigger-happy army controls all levers of power, even after 69 years of its birth as a nation state.
Peace can only be ushered in if Pakistan is able to strengthen its democracy, bring the army under the control of the Government, punish the fundamentalists in an exemplary way and ensure economic progress of its people. If these steps are not taken, it is clear as a crystal that Pakistan will go down in history as a failed state, which would not augur well for us in India as its immediate neighbour. In such an event,we would be a victim of further damage and destruction.
