Given :

Profits percentage of an article.

To Find :

Cost price of Arun and Cost price of Bala.

Solution :

Let the cost price of the article to Arun = a

Arun sells the article at 20% profit to Bala.

Now the cost price to Bala = a + 20% × a

                                             = a + 0.20a

                                            = 1.20a

Bala sells it to Catherine at 10% profit.

Cost price to Catherine = 1.20a + (10% × 1.20a)

                                       = 1.20a + 0.12a)

                                       = 1.32a

Catherine sells it to Dinesh at Rs. 16 profit.

Cost price to Dinesh = (1.32a + 16)

The difference between the cost price of Dinesh and cost price of Arun was 500 Rs.

Cost price of Dinesh - Cost price of Arun = 500

(1.32a + 16) - a = 500

0.32a + 16 = 500

0.32a = 500 - 16

0.32a = 484

a=\frac{484}{0.32}

a = 1512.50

Cost price of Bala  = 1512.50 + (20% × 1512.50)

                               = 1512.50 + (0.20 × 1512.50)

                               = 1512.50 + 302.50

                               = 1815.00 Rs.

Cost price of Arun was Rs. 1512.50 and Bala pays Rs.1815.00 to Arun.
