Explanation:

UNTOUCHABILITY ESSAY 1 (200 WORDS)

The practice of untouchability can be defined as the discrimination of certain groups of people and their inhuman treatment based on their castes and social groups.

Untouchability is a practice so old that it is embedded tightly onto roots of many people in India. People divided in the name of such social practices refuse to see the bigger picture and refrain from treating everyone as equals. It is the naïve thought processes and opinions of certain people that have led to the way in which people from the so called “Lower caste” are treated.

Different words are used across the world to address these people who are the victims of the practice of untouchability such Dalits in Asia and Cagots in Europe. Various brave people with vision have fought against this absurd practice. Some of them include Vinoba Bhave, B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. These people with the help of their supporters chose to fight against the odds and the unfair treatment. This was one of the many evils of the society against which the leaders of independent India were fighting.

Answer:

Good morning everyone. Today I’m here to speak on the topic ‘untouchability’. God created all men and women equal; and man created all types of discriminations and segregations. It pains my heart immensely to think that this evil of casteism, racial discrimination, and inequality still exists in our country! Mahatma Gandhi very rightly said: “The removal of untouchability is one of the highest expressions of Ahimsa.” It is very unfortunate that in some parts of our country, people still indulge in untouchability! I remember a humiliating incident of untouchability which I saw recently. One of the elderly members of our community was treated badly by his employer. I won’t go into the details. I just want to appeal to all of you to raise your voice against this social evil which has been condemned by all our great leaders.

There should be no discrimination of any type in the name of caste, colour, creed, and financial status. Our constitution allows all the citizens of our country equality. It is illegal as well as unethical. It hurts self-belief and pride. Besides, how can India become an advanced country without ensuring equality to her people? I appeal to the people and the Government to take strict action against those who practice untouchability. Thank you.
