Absolute refractive index is the ratio between the velocity of light in air to the velocity of light in the Medium ( water , Glass , Kerosene , Diamomd)

Absolute refractive index denoted by letter n by using subscript 12
n12 = absolute refractobe index of medium of medium 2 with respect to medium 1

n12 =
velocity of light in (air)Medium 1 / Velocity of light in Medium2

Absolute refractive index of diamond
= c1 / c2 where
c1 = velocity of light in Air
c2 = velocity of light in Diamomd

Let absolute refractive index of diamond = n12 = 2.42
Thus
=> n12 = c1 / c2
=> 2.42 = c1 / c2
=> c2 = 2.42 / c1 = (1/2.42) x c1
=> vel.of light in Diamond reduced by the factor of 2.42 than vel. of light in air...

More is the refractibe index slower the velocity of light in the medium...i.e

Here Medium A has Least value and D has maximum value...so The velocity of light will be maximum in D and Minimum in A...

Refractive index of C with respect to med.B
= absolute refractive index of med.B / absolute refractive index of med.A

= 1.44 / 1.52
= 144 /152
= 18 / 19 ( On divinding by 8 )
= 0.94
