The ascent of sap in the xylem tissue of plants is the upward movement of water and minerals from the root to the crown. ... The theory assumes that in the uppermost parts of the tallest trees, the vessels of the xylem are coated with thin films of sap.

Upward movement of water from root, to the parts where it’s needed is called ascent of sap.
Water moves from lower concentration to higher concentration and transpiration also plays an important role in it.
Because transpiration creates a need of water in the parts where it’s happened leaving higher concentration there...
Since, water is moved from lower concentration to higher concentration, this process continues, what we call upward movement of water or ascent of sap.
Hope you’ll get it....
