Answer:

Assume he walks Start - Sch - Lib and then gets lift to Start Tot = 1.25 km. This is always the case provided he does not return to Start before going to Lib and/or he does not walk home from Lib.

Assume he walks Start - Sch - Start - Lib and gets lift back to Start from Lib Tot = 1.75 km.

The problem becomes more complicated if he also walks back to start from Lib.

If he also walks back to Start from Lib Tot = 2.5 km assuming Sch and Lib are sequential

In previous case if Sc and Lib are at opposite sides of Start Tot = 1.5 km

In previous case if Sc and Lib are at right angles and there is short cut back to Start Tot = +/- 2.13 km

If Start and Lib are at right angles and there is short cut from Sc to Lib and then he walks back to Start his total distance (Tot) = +/- 1.809 km

Note that if he walks back to Start from Lib a whole range of complications are possible such as winding roads, no right angels etc.
