Ashoka was one of the cruelest rulers in the beginning of his reign.
Unlike most of the cruelest ruler in the world he felt bad about his evil deeds after watching the terrible scene of Kalinga bloodshed.
He felt ashamed and later adopted Buddhism to spread peace and goodness in his reign.
