If the escalator were turned off, totally 80 steps she could have to take to walk up

Option - 2

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

Asifa and Ajita are in a hurry so they are climbing down the constantly moving down escalator. Asifa and Ajita take 40 and 60 steps to reach the floor respectively. While Ajita takes 3 steps, Asifa takes 1 step in the same time. Select the number that indicates the total steps each one is required to climb down if the escalator is not moving (1) 100 (2) 80 (3) 40 (4) 60.

Solution:

Let the total no of steps be x

Asifa took 40 steps in t1 time, speed = \frac{40}{t1}

Ajita took 60 steps in t2 time, speed = \frac{60}{t2}

Given,

3 \times \frac{40}{t1} = \frac{60}{t2}

2 t2 = t1

Escalator speed = \frac{(y-40)}{t1} = \frac{(y-60)}{t2}

\frac{(y-40)}{2t2} = \frac{(y-60)}{t2}

Y = 80

total steps each one take = 80 steps

Step-by-step explanation:

both the persons and the escalator are moving in the same direction.In this case the relative speed would be (man+stairs)

let the speed of the escalator be E

length of the escalator would be same for both asifa and ajita.

speed of ajita is 3 steps/sec and asifa is 1 step/sec

Ajita is walking 60 steps and she does it in 20 sec (\frac{60}{3}), even the escalator must have moved with speed E .

then length moved by escalator = 20E

total length = 60+20E ..(steps moved by ajifa and escalator)

similarly,

for asifa = 40+40E

both lengths must be same

therefore,

60+20E = 40+40E

60-40 = (40-20)E

20 = 20 E

E= 1

so the length is 60+20E = 60+20(1) = 80

hence ,

total steps each one take = 80 steps
