Globalization is the process in which people, ideas and goods spread throughout the world, spurring more interaction and integration between the world's cultures, governments and economies.
The term is most frequently used in reference to creating an integrated global economy marked by free trade, the free flow of capital and corporate use of foreign labor marketsto maximize returns. However, some use the term globalization more broadly, applying it to the movement of people, knowledge and technology across international borders; some also apply it to the free flow of cultural, environmental and political discourse.
History of globalization
Globalization as a term came to prominence in the 1980s. Although many consider this process a relatively new phenomenon, globalization has been happening for millennia. The Roman Empire, for example, spread its economic and governing systems through significant portions of the ancient world for centuries. Similarly, the trade routes of the Silk Road carried merchants, goods and travelers from China through Central Asia and the Middle East to Europe and represented another wave of globalization. European countries had significant investments overseas in the decades prior to World War I, prompting some economists to label the prewar period as an earlier golden age of globalization.
Globalization has ebbed and flowed throughout history, with periods of expansion, as well as retrenchment. The 21st century has witnessed both. Global stock markets plummeted after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, but rebounded in subsequent years.
Globalization has swept over the entire world like a tsunami. What is not that has not been affected by it! We have been completely globalized, though we claim we have not been! The two catalysts that have been transforming all the cultures the world over are IT revolution and media and networking advancement. MNCs have gone global. So has the western culture!
Though there are many bright sides of globalization, there are some dark ones also. Since Western culture is quite open and advanced, there is no restriction on pornographic and obscene channels. However, other cultures, especially the oriental ones are based on values of abstinence, self-discipline, and self-control. Such adult channels are really affecting other cultures. The westernization process of majority of the youth has already started. Preference for western style of life is visible everywhere. Fast food, western clothes, eating habits, smoking, drinking, going out, pubs, drive-through foods, jeans, etc. all are indicators of the westernization of our culture.
It depends upon us whether we allow ourselves to be influenced by the darker sides of globalization or not. But one thing is sure; if we will not be careful, it is definitely going to influence our culture. We need to take very careful precautions to preserve our culture in the midst of this onslaught of globalization, especially foreign entertainment and information on the impressionable minds of our children.
The wisest approach should be adopted. We must preserve our rich spiritual culture and allow wise blending of the globalization with it. I think the rich morality taught to us by our traditional oriental culture along with the efficient technological advancement given to us by the occidental culture will produce an ideal new culture whose benefits will be immense for the entire mankind.
