After the satyagrah mahatma Gandhi decided to launch nation wide movement by bringing Hindu and Muslim closer together. He felt to take the issue of khilafat which was related to the defeat of ottomen empire in turkey.
The leader of the movement was muhhamad Ali and saukat Ali. Mahatma Gandhi convinced all Muslim leaders to take part in movement.
The movement was began on January 1921.
The movement started with the participation of middle class people. The students left their colleges and schools, teachers left their duty and layers gave up their legal practices.
The export market collepsed, liquor shops were closed down, people refused to wear British cloths.
The movement gradually slows down in the cities because of the expensive khadi, the poor people could not able to buy khadi. Also the students, teachers and layers again join their institution.
Due to the chauri chaura incident mahatma Gandhi decided to stop movement.
