Both Assertion and Reason are true.

  • The cells of the apical meristems undergo continuous mitotic division i.e responsible for the indeterminate growth in plants.
  • Apical meristem is located at the terminal portions of the plant- such as shoot apex and root apex and is composed of undifferentiated cells.
  • Apical meristem actively divides to achieve the longitudinal growth or height of the plant. This growth is defined as primary growth. Since they are involved in the primary extension of the plant, they are also called primary meristems.
  • Apical meristems have 4 zones with particular functions. These are the 1)central zone,2)peripheral zone,3)the medullary meristem and 4) the medullary tissue. The cells of the central zone have a stem cell function, essential for meristem maintenance. The cells of the peripheral zone divide at a rate higher than the central zone and give rise to the cells that contribute to the formation of plant organs like leaves, floral meristems etc.
  • The outermost layer of the apical meristem is called tunica whereas the innermost layers are collectively known as the corpus.
