Humans reproduce by sexual means. In human sperm the XY chromosome segregate and give rise to X and Y respectively. In ovary the genes present are both XX. So if the X chromosome in ovary is fertilized by X chromosome of male sperm the child is female or else male

The male has 23 pair of the XY chromosomes that is the XY gamete whereas the female has the XX gametes.
When these gametes fuse, there is a 50-50%. chance for the progeny to be either a male or a female.
Since the Y determines the sex of the embryo, the male is responsible for the gender of the resultant child.
The cross will be as follows:
XY XX
X. Y. X. X

XX. XX. XY. XY

THAT IS 50-50% for both male and female.
