The economic situation of India
- The INC's win was significantly lower than the performance obtained under Jawaharlal Nehru in the three previous elections. By 1967, India's economic growth had accelerated the Five-Year Plan from 1961 to 1966, setting a goal of 5.6% annual growth, but the actual growth pace was 2.4%.
- The government's prestige was improved under Lal Bahadur Shastri after India won in the 1965 war with Pakistan. The 1967 Indian general election elected India's 4th Lok Sabha and was conducted from February 17 to 21.
- 520 Single-Member constituencies (an expansion of 26) served the union territories and 27 Indian states. The 'Indian National Congress' secured a fourth continuous term in office and over 54 percent of the seats under Indira Gandhi's rule, while other parties won not more than 10%.
