American civil war led to a sharp decline in British import of raw cotton from southern US.
British textile industry turned to India to supply their mills with raw cotton.
raw cotton exports from India increased sharply due to this.
Indian weavers thus could not find any good quality raw cotton to weave.
this scarcity of raw cotton led to a sharp increase in the price.
this problem was soon added to by Indian entrepreneurs who started their own textile factories in India, giving them even more competition
