we have to assign oxidation number to each element in the following compounds

(a) Ca3(PO4)2

(b) K2Cr2O7

(c) SO3²¯

(d) BrO3¯

solution : we have to just find the oxidation no of central element of any compound rest element have their general oxidation state.

(a) Ca3(PO4)2 , here P is central element. we have to focus on it. rest Ca and O don't change their O.S.

oxidation state of Ca = +2

oxidation state of O = -2

let oxidation state of p is x

3(+2) + 2(x + 4 × -2) = 0

⇒6 + 2x - 16 = 0

⇒x = +5

so oxidation state of p is +5

do the same thing for rest of all.

(b) let o.s of Cr is x

o.s of k = +1

o.s of o = -2

⇒2(+1) + 2x + 7(-2) = 0

⇒x = +6

so oxidation state of cr is +6

(c) let o.s of s is x

o.s of o = -2

⇒x + 3(-2) = -2

⇒x = +4

therefore the oxidation state of s is +4.

(d) let o.s of Br is x

o.s of o = -2

x + 3(-2) = -1

⇒x = +5

therefore the oxidation state of Br is +5.
