Correct Question :-

Assign oxidation number to the underlined elements in each of the following species

(a) NaH2PO4 (b) K2MnO4

Answer :-

(a) NaH2PO4

Let the oxidation number of P be x.

Oxidation number of :-

Na = +1

H2 = +1

P = x

O4 = -2

Sum of oxidation numbers of various atoms in NaH2O4 = 1(+1) + 2(+1) + 1(x) + 4(-2)

= x - 5

Sum of oxidation numbers of various atoms in NaH2P4 is zero.

x - 5 = 0 , x = +5

Therefore, oxidation number of NaH2PO4 = +5.

b) K2MnO4

Let the oxidation number of Mn be x.

Oxidation number of :-

K = +1

Mn = x

O4 = -2

Sum of oxidation numbers of various atoms in K2MnO4 = 2(+1) + 1(x) + 4(-2)

= x - 6

Sum of oxidation numbers of various atoms in K2MnO4 is zero.

x - 6 = 0 , x = +6

Therefore, oxidation number of K2MnO4 = +6.

Oxidation :- Oxidation is the process which involves addition of oxygen and removal of hydrogen.
