- Balkan was a cluster of present day countries like Serbia, Albania, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Slovenia.

- It was ruled by Ottoman empire and inhabitants were called slavs.

- disintegration of Ottoman empire and spread of nationalist ideas in Europe made this area very explosive.

- revolutionaries of this region demanded for independence.

- after the balkan states got independence, they were jealous of each other and wanted to extend their territories.

- European powers - austro-hungary, Russia, Germany and Britain wanted to extend their influence an dominance on this region.

- This led to series of wars known as world war 1

2.) The Greek War of Independence is also called the Greek Revolution. It took place between 1821 and 1832. It was fought against the Ottoman Empire. The Russian Empire, Great Britain, Kingdom of France and many other European powers helped them in their efforts. The Eyalets of Egypt, Algeria and Tripolitania, and the Beylik of Tunis were on the side of the Ottomans.

The war went on for 8 years, 6 months and 3 weeks. It took place in the Balkans and the Aegean Sea. Finally the Greek won. The First Hellenic Republic was established. The Treaty of Constantinople was signed.

3.) Treaty of Constantinople, 1932 recognised Greece as the independent nation from the Ottoman Turkey.
