Assignment 1,
The parental blood groups are given below. You can predict the possible types of inheritance in children.
1.       Homozygous A x Homozygous A
2.       Homozygous B x Homozygous B
3.       Homozygous A x Homozygous B
4.       Heterozygous A x Heterozygous B
5.       Heterozygous A x Heterozygous A
6.       Heterozygous B x Heterozygous B

Answer:

1. Homozygous A

2. Homozygous B

3. AB group

4. (a) AB group

(b) O group

(c) Heterozygous A

(d) Heterozygous B

5. (a) Homozygous A

(b) O group

(c) Heterozygous A

6. (a) Homozygous B

(b) O group

(c) Heterozygous B

7. O group

Introduction:

Homozygous means both of the alleles constituting the blood cell are the same. Heterozygous means both of the alleles are different. The alleles available are A, B and i.

Hence homozygous is denoted as

I^X I^X or ii

and heterozygous is denoted as

I^XI^Y or I^Xi or I^Y i

Different allele combination and corresponding blood group:

I^AI^A - Homozygous A\\I^BI^B - Homozygous B\\I^Ai - Heterozygous A\\I^Bi - Heterozygous B\\ii - O group\\I^AI^B - AB group

Step by step explanation:

1. Father - I^A I^ A

Mother - I^A I^ A

Both father and mother has only one type of allele. Hence child can have only one type from both the parents and the only possibility of child's blood group is Homozygous A (I^A I^ A)

2.  Father - I^B I^ B

Mother - I^B I^ B

Same as above, child can have only Homozygous B (I^B I^ B)

3. Father - I^A I^ A

Mother - I^B I^ B

(a) Father gives A and mother gives B. So child will have AB group.

Here father and mother has different alleles. But they themselves has only 1 type (Father has only A and mother has only B). So the child will have A allele from father and B allele from mother. Hence child's blood group is AB group.

4. Father - I^Ai

Mother - I^Bi

Here there are 4 possibilities:

(a) Father gives A and mother gives B. So child will have AB group. (I^A I^B)

(b) Father gives A and mother gives i. So child will have heterozygous A. (I^Ai)

(c) Father gives i and mother gives B. So child will have heterozygous B. (I^Bi)

(d) Father gives i and mother gives i. So child will have O group. (ii)

5. Father - I^Ai

Mother - I^Ai

Here there are 4 possibilities:

(a) Father gives A and mother gives A. So child will have homozygous A.(I^AI^A)

(b) Father gives i and mother gives A. So child will have heterozygous A.(I^Ai)

(c) Father gives i and mother gives i. So child will have O group. (ii)

(d) Father gives A and mother gives i. So child will have heterozygous A.(I^Ai)

But possibility of child's blood group is heterozygous A, homozygous A and O group.

6. Father - I^Bi

Mother - I^Bi

It is same as above except both can give only i and B.

So possibilities of child's blood group is Heterozygous B, homozygous B and O group.

7. Father - ii

Mother - ii

Hence child will only get i allele from both the parents. So child can only have O group.(ii)

PS: Sorry for the long answer :( I have taken the first parent to be father and the second to be mother. You can take it in any combination. Cheers!!
