There are several reasons for failure in interpersonal communications. The message can not be received exactly the way the sender wants in certain communications and it is therefore necessary for the communicator to obtain input so as to make sure their message is understood clearly. There are also communication gaps, which can happen at any point in the communication process. Barriers will distort your message and you risk wasting time and/or resources by creating uncertainty and misunderstanding. Effective communication requires the avoidance of these challenges and the delivery of a straightforward and concise message.

- Taboos and emotional barriers .
- Lack of interest, attention, irrelevance, or distractions to the receiver.

- Physical barriers to non-verbal communication.
- Language differences and the difficulty in understanding unfamiliar accents.
