Lichen is the association between blue green algae and fungi. Both the partners benefit from this relationship hence, it is called as mutualistic symbiosis. In this relationship, algae being photosynthetic organism produce food and fungi protect algae as well gather moisture and anchor the lichen body

The symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi is lichen . The fungal component is called mycobiont while the algae component is called phycobiont.

The algae found in lichens are more diverse – anobacteria, green algae, yellow-green algae and even brown algae. The most common species is the green alga Trebouxia. There are also some interesting algae which possess several algae at the same time.
