At a local bakery, all loaves of wheat bread come with 19 slices, while all loaves of rye
bread come with 20 slices. If Grayson bought the same number of slices of each type of
bread, what is the smallest number of slices of each type that Grayson could have
bought?

A standard loaf has about 13-17 slices (this includes the 2 heels)Generally you can make 6.5-8.5 sandwiches. Now, a baguette style loaf is different, this can yield far more or far less depending upon size and thickness of slices. At my work we use thin baguettes so we only get 2 full sandwiches or 4 1/2 sized sandwiches. But crustini…the yield could be roughly 25-30ea if sliced accurately.

Find LCM of 19 and 20:
Since 19 is a prime number
LCM = 19 x 20 = 380
He bought 380 slices of each.
.
Number the number of loaves of each type of bread:
Number of loaves of wheat bread = 380 ÷ 19 = 20
Number of loves of rye = 380 ÷ 20 = 19
.
Answer: Grayson bought 20 loaves of wheat bread and 19 loaves of rye bread. He bought 380 pieces of each type.
